If you are having trouble paying then please ensure that you contact us immediately.
If you do not pay your council tax after you have received a reminder then there are a number of actions that we can take.
- You will lose your right to pay in installments and will need to settle the full amount
- You may be summoned to court
- You will be additionally charged for any legal costs incurred by the council
- You may be issued with a liability order
Once a liability order has been issued the council may legally:
- Deduct money straight from your earnings or benefits
- Ask an enforcement agent (bailiff) to recover the outstanding balance along with additional charges
- Force you to sell your property and pay off the council tax debt plus interest out of any money left after the mortgage has been repaid
