If you don't pay your council tax

If you are having trouble paying then please ensure that you contact us immediately.

If you do not pay your council tax after you have received a reminder then there are a number of actions that we can take.

  • You will lose your right to pay in installments and will need to settle the full amount
  • You may be summoned to court
  • You will be additionally charged for any legal costs incurred by the council
  • You may be issued with a liability order

Once a liability order has been issued the council may legally:

  • Deduct money straight from your earnings or benefits
  • Ask an enforcement agent (bailiff) to recover the outstanding balance along with additional charges
  • Force you to sell your property and pay off the council tax debt plus interest out of any money left after the mortgage has been repaid
  • Apply to make you bankrupt
  • Apply to the magistrates’ court for you to be sent to prison
